Specialists in pointing and chimney leadwork

At A P Nash Roofing, we’re specialists in pointing and chimney leadwork in Dorset and beyond. Repointing a chimney involves renewing the seals between joints, often in brickwork, which can decay over time due to age or weathering. Refreshing the pointing prevents water entering the building and helps keep your home watertight.

Why Lead Is So Useful for Roof Work

Lead has been used as a roofing material for centuries – in fact, it’s one of the oldest materials used in roofing. The secrets of its success are its durability and reliability. It’s extremely flexible, so can be moulded round those awkward shapes and bends on a roof to create a firm seal, stopping water from entering joins. It’s waterproof and expands and contracts with extremes of temperature without cracking, so it is ideal for the unpredictable English weather.

Not only that, but it resists corrosion of most types, including UV rays and pollutants in the atmosphere, so its lifespan when used as a roofing material is almost unsurpassed. You’ll commonly find lead used to prevent water penetration around chimneys, ventilation pipes, around windows and doors and on walls where they meet the roof.

When Repointing Is Necessary

It can be hard to identify whether your chimney needs repointing from ground level, but one sign would be if the walls inside your home around the chimney area are showing any signs of damage or damp. If your roof is getting on in years, then it’s probably worth asking for an expert inspection of the roof as soon as possible. Failed mortar joints can allow water into cracks, which will worsen them over time, particularly after freezing and thawing in winter. If the problem goes untreated, you run the risk of your chimney collapsing over time.
